Daniel Francis Brosnahan Jr., of Bridgewater, N.J., passed away on Monday, September 23, 2019. He was 85. Born in 1933 in Worcester, Mass., he was a New Jersey resident for more than 50 years, residing in Denville, Middletown and Bridgewater.
A memorial service celebrating Dan’s life will be held on Sunday, November 10, at noon at the Somerville Elks Lodge 1068, 375 Union Avenue, Bridgewater, N.J.
Dan attended St. John’s High School in Worcester, Mass., where he majored in football and baseball. After graduating in 1951, he worked in Worcester, forging steel at American Steel and Wire, and hauling sides of beef at Chicago Dressed Beef. At night, he trained at a boxing gym, sparring with local legend George “Curly” Monroe. Describing one of his professional bouts, he would say, “There was blood all over the ring, most of it mine.”
In 1958, Dan talked his way into Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), convincing the dean of admissions to overlook the fact that he was married and had two children, neither of which was allowed at the time. He went to school days, worked nights, and earned his Bachelor of Science with Distinction in electrical engineering in 1962. He earned his Master of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1965 from New York University through the Graduate Study Program of Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, N.J., where he managed a group of computer analysts and engineers. His career continued at AT&T, Computer Sciences, Prime Computer and Motorola.
Dan’s many hobbies and pursuits included hunting, fishing, archery, karate, softball, tennis, golf, bridge, crossword puzzles, sudokus and dog training. He was an archery champion, founding member of the St. Hubert’s Dog Obedience Club in Madison, N.J., and a volunteer assistant trainer at Top Dog Obedience School in Flanders, N.J. He earned an obedience championship title with his first dog, Gabby, and another with his second dog, Casey. He judged countless dog obedience matches. Dan loved helping people conquer their challenges and pursue their dreams. He had little use for pretentiousness, took fashion cues from no one, could always “scarf down” a donut or a hotdog, and could not resist puppies and babies.
Daniel was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Diane; his father, Daniel Brosnahan Sr.; his mother, Florence Lawler; and his brother Arthur. He is survived by his wife, Sherry; his daughter Denise White of Camden, Maine; daughter Darilyn Brosnahan, of Newburyport, Mass.; son, Daniel Brosnahan III, of Wells, Maine; and daughter Dayna Brooks, of Plum Island, Mass. and Key West, Fla.; his granddaughter, Hanna Condon; and his siblings Joanne Elliott, Ralph Brosnahan, John Brosnahan, Paul Brosnahan and Kathy Vandiford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (www.wpi.edu). Condolences may also be offered online at the Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home website (brucecvanarsdalefuneralhome.com).
