During WWII, Elsie worked at Western Electric in Kearny, testing communications equipment for the war effort. She held offices in the Order of Eastern Star in Elizabeth. Elsie was a long-time member of the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church and was active in its Women’s Circle. She worked for the Bridgewater-Raritan School District as an aide, retiring in 1984. Elsie volunteered at the Somerset County Clothes Pantry and enjoyed time at the Bridgewater Senior Center. She knew no greater joy than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elsie was known for her ready smile and great sense of humor, as well as her passion for walking. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Bersven (Bert) Haukdal, brother Mekal (Frank) Jansen, and sisters Aslaug Hansen and Elisabeth Jansen.

Surviving are her son Robert A. Haukdal and wife Trish; daughter Elaine J. Chesebro and husband Jeff; four grandchildren: Eric Haukdal (Laura Peters), Amy Haukdal Spencer (John), Christopher Chesebro (Kelly Eng), and Brian Chesebro (Tucker); four great grandchildren: Cy and Ian Haukdal and Torunn and Reidunn Spencer; and several nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Norway.

Private graveside services will be held at the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
