It is with broken hearts that our family announces the passing of Jan Burnham McLachlan. Jan died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on May 25, 2020.

Jan was born in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on November 12th, 1955 and has been a resident of Somerville, New Jersey since 1981. She was a 1973 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and received her undergraduate degree from University of Hartford in 1977 and years later a master’s degree from Farleigh Dickinson University, both with magna cum laude distinction.

While at the University of Hartford, Jan met the love of her life, John Morgan McLachlan Jr., known to all as Morgan. Married in 1981, they spent the next 38 years happily building their family and being active in their community. Her greatest pride and joy were her three sons, John, Andrew “Drew,” and Alex.

Jan was an accomplished ballerina, having danced throughout her youth in Delaware. Possessing confidence and talent, she competed in the Miss Teen Delaware pageant in 1972. After attending college, she continued to be an inspiring ballet dancer and instructor at Windsor Ballet in Hartford, CT and later at the Serova School of Dance in Somerville, NJ.

Jan was a passionate educator and advocate for children, and students thrived in her classrooms. She served as the founder and director of the Somerville YMCA’s Kiddie Corner then becoming the preschool director at the First Baptist Church in Somerville, holding that position for 10 years. After completing her advanced degree, she went on to teach and serve the special education community in the Franklin School system for 20 years until her retirement in May 2019. She was an amazing role model for so many teachers that she interacted with during her tenure.

Jan was known for her involvement in a myriad of personal, civic and community activities. Throughout her life she was part of countless charitable organizations such United Reformed Church, President of Middle Earth NJ, President of the Somerset Medical Center Auxiliary, the Somerville YMCA, President of The Henderson Foundation and Co-Founder of The Drew McLachlan Memorial Fund, serving in leadership roles for many of these organizations.

Her social life was filled with abundant relationships, ranging from her childhood Rehoboth friends, to the Somerville community of families she raised her family with, to college friends, to co-workers, to her “No Stress Book Club” members. She spent her summers with family and friends enjoying her favorite place, Point Pleasant Beach. In recent years, Jan, Morgan and the boys spent time in Naples, Florida enjoying the weather, the beach, golf, boating, and making new acquaintances. Her kindness and generous spirit made her admired and loved by the people she touched. Jan’s out-going personality, boisterous laughter, and boundless energy will be greatly missed by them all.

Jan was predeceased by her son Andrew and her parents Paul and Audrey Burnham. Surviving Jan is her devoted and loving husband, Morgan, and her two beloved sons, John Morgan III and Alex McLachlan.

Services will be announced at a later date by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, Somerville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her son’s memorial foundation: The Drew McLachlan Memorial Fund, PO 975, Somerville, NJ 08876 or www.thedrewfund.com.
