Jay A. Rashkin passed away on May 4, 2020. He was 86 years old. He was a resident of New Jersey for three years and had lived in Monticello, NY prior to that. He was born in the Bronx on September 21, 1933 to Abraham and Hilda Rashkin. Always the budding scientist, he went to a specialty high school in New York City specializing in math and science. Following high school, he went to New York University undergraduate and Princeton University graduate school for his PhD, specializing in Chemistry. He spent much of his working career in the laboratory experimenting with catalysts and developing patents for use in the processing of oil by-products. In the later 15 years of Jay’s working life he taught chemistry and environmental sciences at Sullivan County Community College in New York State. It was there that he realized his greatest contribution which was to his students by sharing with them his love of science and how we impact our climate. Jay was a philanthropist. He cared deeply about giving to organizations that supported social justice, environmental causes, improved health and education, and animal rights to name a few.

Jay is survived by his daughter, Lauren Ryan and her fiancé Wayne Scott, his son, David Rashkin, his granddaughter Stephanie Ryan and her fiancé Jason Mauro, his grandson, Matthew Ryan, and his ex-wife and friend, Shirley Rashkin. We will all miss his intellect, his infectious laughter, and his love.

Services will be private. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, Somerville.
