Former Somerville, NJ Mayor, John Francis Kobiela Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 10, 2019 at the Veterans Nursing Home in Paramus, NJ.

Born on August 29, 1928 in Somerville, John spent his entire life in the community he loved and was proud to serve as Mayor from 1991-1996. As a public servant, he also served on various town boards/committees and had a special bond with the Somerville Fire Dept. His commitment to others also included 29 years as a Somerset County 4-H Leader and, as the 4-H Assn President, played an instrumental role in the building of the 4-H Center on Milltown Rd, Bridgewater. John also enjoyed membership in the Somerville Elks, the American Legion and often served as an usher during mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.

John joined the Army in 1946 and after a tour of duty in the Aleutian Islands during World War II, he returned to Somerville and started working at Union Carbide in Bound Brook, NJ. He retired from his position in the R&D dept of Union Carbide in 1985 after 38 years. John was awarded the WW2 Victory Medal of his service during the war.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Genevieve who passed away in 1978 and step-son Jimmy Salek.

John is survived by his second wife, Jean Salek Kobiela. He leaves behind his children John Kobiela Jr; Shirley Walker; Carol Thomas, and Beverly Loss; along with their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He also will be missed by Jean’s family, Larry Salek, David Salek, William Salek, and their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

Prayers will be 9am Monday at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville followed by a 10am mass at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave, Somerville. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1-5pm Sunday at the funeral home.
