Obituary

Joseph A. Kovac Sr., 96, of Raritan, N.J., died on June 28, 2017, at his home.

Born on Dec. 12, 1920, in the same Anderson Street residence where he passed, Joseph lived in Raritan for all but the 20 years he was in the United States Navy. He enlisted in the military in 1941 and served aboard the USS Suwannee escort carrier during World War II as an Aviation Structural Mechanic Hydraulic Tech 1st class before being stationed in several different locations and retiring from the Navy in 1961.

Joseph retired from his job at United Technologies Inmont in Bound Brook, N.J., in 1983. He enjoyed attending dirt track auto races, gardening, spending time with his grandson, following sports and watching westerns on television. He was a life member and past commander of Raritan’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Sante Moretti Post 1748 and in 2011 was the Grand Marshal of his hometown’s 30th annual John Basilone Memorial Parade. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens of St. Joseph’s.

Joseph was married to Lorraine Kovac (Galbavy) for 50 years.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Kovac, and four sisters. He is survived by his wife; son Kevin and his wife Lori; his grandson Kael; and one brother.

A mass of Christian burial will be 9:30am Thursday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 16 E. Somerset St, Raritan. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.

Visitation will be 4-8pm Wednesday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Somerville Rescue Squad, 21 Park Ave., Somerville, NJ, 08876, and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, P.O. Box 5281, 3201 Route 22 East, North Branch, NJ, 08876.
