Obituary

Karen Lee O’Brien, born on October 25, 1959 passed on September 27th, 2020 after her battle with Cancer. She is survived by her mother, Clarice Odenkirk of Stuart Florida, her devoted husband of 31 years, Vincent O’Brien and her two loving daughters, Mrs. Katlyn Austin and Mrs. Kelly Bott. Karen is also survived by her sister Ellen Donahue of Florida, and brother David Odenkirk of Virginia along with their spouses and children. She was preceded into God’s Grace by her father William D. Odenkirk and her two brothers Douglas J. Odenkirk and William E. Odenkirk.

Karen was heavily involved with the Somerville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women serving as President for many years with them. She enjoyed cooking and baking with her daughters and loved hosting her extended family for holidays and birthdays. Karen absolutely adored gardening in her butterfly garden and growing her own produce for some of her signature recipes. She was the type of person who didn’t need a book or internet to find out the name of a plant. She always knew what was in her garden.
Karen starting working early in life and was employed in many different industries such as the Ford Motor Company in Mahwah, a retail store manager with Linen and Things, and a secretary and accounts payables provider with Scientific Models of Berkley Heights during her first time of service with them. This is where Karen met Vince and started their lives together. During these years Karen also ran her own catering business on the weekends. She also worked with Atlantic Import and Export Co. in Branchburg as their inventory control manager for six years. Most recently, she would return to Scientific Models to help family with inventory inquires and management.

Karen was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We know that she is walking in Heaven’s garden with family and friends who have passed; along with her beloved dogs Darla and Tara; or eating dishes from some of the best chefs that have ever cooked and telling them they used too much salt.

Visitation will be 6-8pm with services at 7:30pm Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville.
