Obituary

Leocadia "Lee" Liczwinko-DeCarlo passed away at 108 years old on February 14, 2019 after living a loving and fulfilling life. A recent resident of Bridgeway Nursing Home in Bridgewater NJ, she is predeceased by her parents John Liczwinko and Veronica Jankowski along with four younger siblings. Lee is survived by daughter Rita Gorky and her husband Julius Gorky. She is lovingly remembered by 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Bayonne, NJ in 1911, Lee started work as a governess at age thirteen, where she cared for the children and maintained the household. From there, Lee worked at the Bayonne Maidenform Company where she recalled openly handling chemicals “that would put holes in my clothes." Ahead of her time as a woman entrepreneur in the early 1930s, Lee put her self-taught beautician skills to work and opened her own salon, "Lee's Parisian.” Profitable despite The Great Depression, she went on to add a Laundromat to her portfolio.

Years later, after retiring as a beautician, Lee moved to Bridgewater, NJ and answered an ad in the Courier News, leading her to starting a second career at age 80 as a hostess at the Manville Senior Center. Lee worked at the Center for over 10 years and was well into her 90s when she eventually retired for good. A lover of games and quite the skilled player, Lee filled her retirement days socializing and playing cards with her friends and family several days a week.

Prayers will be said 9am at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville followed by a 10am mass at St. Bernard RC Church in Bridgewater. Lee will be buried at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA.

In lieu of flowers, Lee requested donations be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. To send condolences, visit www.brucecvanarsdalefuneralhome.com.
