Matej Mihalov, 63
August 1st, 1956 - June 15th, 2020

Early in the morning of June 15th, 2020, Matej Mihalov passed at Kindred Hospital at the age of 63. Matej was born on August 1st, 1956 in Slovakia to the parents of Michal and Anna Mihalov.

Matej grew up in Senne, Slovakia and once married, moved to Michalovce, Slovakia with his wife Marta, where they raised their three daughters. Matej was a loving and caring husband to his wife, Marta for almost 43 years. She will miss the beautiful flowers he would always surprise her with but will miss his loving presence even more. He was also a wonderful father who spent a lot of time with his kids, teaching them how to ice skate, swim, and would take them everywhere with him. He especially loved taking them to work whenever he could. He later became just as an amazing grandfather to his five grandchildren.

In Slovakia, Matej worked as a fisherman and a ranger on a fishing farm. In 1995, he officially immigrated to NJ to give his family a better life, they have all stayed here since. He has been a resident of Manville NJ for 20 years and for the past 18 years has worked as a mechanic for Laurel Circle (Arbor Glen) in Bridgwater. When he wasn’t working Matej enjoyed planting and gardening, fixing anything he could find (he loved his tools), baking traditional slovak cakes, swimming in his pool during the summer months, along with playing sports and hunting.

Matej also enjoyed going back to Slovakia whenever he could to visit his family, but also loved when family would come visit him in NJ because he enjoyed showing them around NYC, Atlantic City, and Princeton. Family was always the most important part of his life, so he spent the majority of his time with them.

Matej is predeceased by his mother, Anna Hudakova Mihalova, and his daughter Ivanka Mihalova. He is survived by his wife, Marta Barkovciova Mihalova and his father Michal Mihalov. His three children: Marta Dzadik (wife of Vasil Dzadik), Lucia Dzuba (wife of Slavomir Dzuba), and Katarina Stech (wife of Tomasz Stech). Also surviving him are his sisters Eva Mihalova Hisemova (wife of Michal Hisem), and Slavka Mihalova Vojnikova. He has five surviving grandchildren, Nina Dzadik, Nicolle Dzuba, Victoria Dzuba, Josef Stech, and Anthony Stech.

Matej loved being around his family and friends so all are welcome to attend the viewing and funeral. The viewing will be held on Thursday June 18th from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 111 North Gaston Ave, Somerville. The mass will be held on Friday June 19th at 9AM at Christ the Redeemer Church, 205 South Main St., Manville. A procession will follow the mass passing by places that are important to Matej and will conclude at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hillsborough.
