Melvin A. Mayer (Mel), 78, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 24, 2017.

Born in Plainfield, NJ on February 24, 1939, Mel lived in Oldwick and later Lebanon, NJ, where he resided with his wife of 48 years, Margo Jardot Mayer. Mel was the son of the late Horace and Evelyn Mayer of North Plainfield, NJ.

Mel was a graduate and alumni of the University of Miami, the ”U”, and a longtime fan of the “Canes” and the Dolphins. After graduating from college, Mel served our great country in the Army Reserves from 1963 to 1969 achieving the rank of Sergeant.

Mel took over his family’s electrical supply business and became the owner and President of Circle Electric Supply in Plainfield, NJ, and in subsequent years opened Circle Lighting, a beautiful lighting showroom originally located on the Somerville Circle that later relocated to Rt. 206, Somerville, NJ.

Mel was a member of Raritan Valley Country Club where he served as President in 2001. Mel was a member of the USGA and the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) where he served as a volunteer official. He was also a member of the Somerset County 200 Club.

Mel had many friends that he enjoyed and developed lasting relationships over the years. Mel was an avid golfer, an accomplished airman piloting his own Cessna and enjoyed many long country rides on his Harley.

Mel is survived by his wife Margo Jardot Mayer, his loving children Jeffrey Mayer, his wife Angela and grandson Luca of Brooklyn, NY and Sag Harbor, L.I, Brian Mayer, his wife Kristen and granddaughter Alyson, of Lopatcong, NJ. Also surviving Mel is his sister Phyllis Brace of Chicago, Illinois.

A celebration of Mel’s life will be held for family and friends. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville, NJ, 08876.
