Robert was born in New Brunswick and was a life-long resident of Somerset. He studied at Lawrenceville School and graduated with a MA in history from Dickinson College. Robert was employed as a realtor at Berkshire Hathaway NJ Properties in Hillsborough. He was also a statesman, historian, and gentleman farmer. Robert was beloved and esteemed leader of Hillsborough Reformed Church where he was an author of chapters of the church history. He was an elder in the East Millstone Reformed Church and the Hillsborough Reformed Church at Millstone. Robert was the Vice-president of the Hillsborough Reformed Church and a leader in the Reformed Church archives. Robert was a participant on ongoing Bible study and a Lay Reader in worship. He was Vice President and President of the Classis of Delaware Raritan. Robert was also an Elder Delegate to the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America. He was a member of the Chair of the Outreach Committee, the Natural Church Development Health Team, and the Mission and Benevolence Committee.

Robert’s Service to the township of Franklin Township was very important to him. He served as deputy Mayor from July 1, 1978 to June 30, 1979; July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1986 & July 1, 1992 to June 30, 1993. He was Mayor from July 1, 1979 to June 30, 1980 & July 1, 1989 to June 30, 1990. Robert was a Councilman At-Large from July 1, 1975 to December 31, 1995 & January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2003. He was also Councilman, 3rd Ward from September 18, 2007 to December 31, 2009. Robert was a Local Historian from February 14, 2006 to the present time. He was a member of the Historic Preservation (Advisory) Commission from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 1999, Council Liaison in 2002, 2003, 2008 & 2009 and again as Regular Member from January 7, 2019 to present Robert was a member of the Planning Board Class I from January 1, 2004 to September 18, 2007 & Class IV Member January 12, 2010 to present. He was also a Redevelopment Agency Member from January 12, 2010 to present. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing chess and spending time with his family. Robert will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents Thomas Holcombe Mettler and Irene Mettler, Dorothy Campbell Mettler, and Alison Mettler Wilson.

Robert is survived by his wife Aruna Dolly Mettler, step son Siddhartha Prasad and daughter-in-law Banu Prasad, step daughter Deviyani Mercado, grandchildren Arianna Prasad, Devin Prasad, Cristian Mercado and Vanessa Mercado, his brothers William Kingsland Mettler and wife Marylou McGlynn Mettler, Melissa Abrams Mettler, and husband Brown Abrams, Elizabeth Mettler Bacon and husband Sam, Anthony Holcombe Mettler and wife Ana, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2pm Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Hillsborough Reformed Church in Hillsborough. Cremation will be private. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, Somerville.
