Obituary

Jeanne W. Locke

Jeanne W. Locke, of Skillman, formerly of Somerville, died Sunday April 9, 2017 at Princeton Medical Center. She had just turned 93.

Born in Chambersburg, PA, she attended Wilson College where she graduated with a BA in English in 1945, and until recently was still active in her class reunions. She married Dr. John G. Locke in 1945, in Charleston, SC where he was stationed as a dentist in the Navy. He later had a dental practice in Raritan for 52 years and they resided in Somerville until moving to Skillman in 2001.

She was a founding charter member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in 1952 when they began the first Lutheran church in Somerville. There, she remained very active, later studying at Princeton Theological Seminary and receiving her Associates in Ministry, and becoming the Director of Volunteer Ministry, and Parish Worker. Trained as a teacher of English and History, she taught from 1945-1950 in Charleston, SC and later at Somerville High School. She played the piano her entire life.

Jeanne's record of community service in Somerville area goes as far back as to when she moved to Somerville in 1948. The organizations that she was involved in were focused on those in need, inclusivity, education, historical, and ecumenical.

They include the Raritan Lion's Club Auxiliary, Somerset Hospital, American Association of University Women, Somerville elementary, middle, and high school PTAs; International Association of Kings Daughters and Sons Inc., Somerset County Mental Health Association; Somerville History Club; Somerville Bicentennial Committee; Visiting Homemaker's Service (now Certified Health Aids of Somerset County) of N.J.; established Shelter Care Home for the Elderly; Food Bank Network of Somerset County; United Way of Somerset Valley; Home Care Council of New Jersey; People Care Center; Samaritan Shelter, Inc.; Human Services Advisory Committee of Somerset County; Alternatives, Inc.

In many of these organizations she was a trustee or served as President or Vice President. Her life of service to others and in her faith was unparalleled. In 2004 she founded The John G. Locke, DDS, Pediatric Dental Program, aimed to assist low income families in Somerville County providing and coordinating free dental care and dental health education for children ages 5 to 17. This program was created in memory of her husband.

She leaves behind four children: Kathleen Locke Mannheimer and husband Ralph of Skillman; Stephanie Locke Angelakos and husband Peter of Amherst, NY; John Locke, Jr. and wife Kathryn of Glen Arm, MD; Jennifer Locke Jones and husband John of Alexandria, VA. She also leaves seven grandchildren: Megan, Michael, Matthew, Allison, John Edgar, Christopher, and Nicole; two great grandchildren Panayiota and Myrofora. And friend Ted Peters.
