Obituary

Irma Hadassah “Dossie” Weissbein, 81, died Wednesday (August 16) at her residence in Fairfax Station, VA of complications arising from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Dossie was born May 14, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of Rose and Simon Siegel. She resided in Brooklyn until she left for college, and then moved with her husband Leonard Weissbein to Bridgewater, NJ in 1960 where she raised 4 children and their menagerie of pets including cats, dogs, fish, caimans, lizards, snakes, turtles, and hamsters.
​Dossie graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. She used this degree in her work as a part-time religious school teacher, and her leadership in many volunteer positions.
​Dossie was a member of Temple Sholom where she served as the first female president. She received the 1996-7 Hannah G. Solomon Award from the Greater Somerset County section of the National Counsel of Jewish Women (NCJW) for her work with NCJW, Jewish Family Services, the Chevra Kaddisha, and Hadassah. She also served a term as president of the local chapter of the NCJW. Dossie was instrumental in helping to make women equal participants in worship at her synagogue, and also established Shir L’Sholom an award winning literary publication there.
​Following the death of her eldest daughter, Dossie established a non-denominational chapter of Compassionate Friends support group for bereaved parents and siblings. She organized monthly meetings, and reached out to those experiencing loss.
​Dossie loved travel and visited all 7 continents. She was a voracious reader who especially enjoyed mystery novels. In recent years, her philanthropy continued through donations to myriad charities, particularly those providing for nature and wildlife.
​Dossie was predeceased by her husband, Leonard in 2006, and her daughter Sarah in 1994. She leaves behind 3 children, David Weissbein and wife, Nancy; Cynthia Macken and her husband, Ron; and Daniel Weissbein and his wife, Rosa; a brother Bernard Siegel; and 5 grandchildren Matthew, Sierra, Alana, Elijah, and Leonardo.
Services will be held 11am Monday August 20th at Temple Sholom, 594 North Bridge Street, Bridgewater. Interment will follow at Temple Sholom Cemetery, Bridgewater. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, Somerville. To send condolences, visit www.brucecvanarsdalefuneralhome.com.
