Kanak was born and raised in India and was formerly of Philadelphia, PA and Martinsville, NJ. Kanak graduated from Calcutta University in India with a B.A. in literature and then completed her M.A. at the University of Pennsylvania. She was employed as a high school teacher at Rutgers Prep School in Somerset where she taught history and introduced world affairs to the standard curriculum.Kanak was very politically active at the grass-roots level as well as with the Democratic Party. She was a leading figure in the South Asian community. As a candidate for State Assembly, she was the first Indian woman to run for office in New Jersey, probably in the U.S. In her spare time, Kanak enjoyed reading, she was a fabulous cook and loved to travel the world. Kanak will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Manoranjan Dutta, an economics professor at Rutgers University, who died in 2015, and in 2014, by her beloved
son-in-law Bhupender Kaul, a telecommunications executive in New York City. She is also predeceased by her four brothersand one sister in India, who stayed close even though they were worlds apart.

Surviving is her daughter Kavery Kaul, a documentary filmmaker, and her grandchildren Usha and Ashok Kaul.

Services will be 11am Thursday at Somerset Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.
