Obituary

Shirley Louise Wolf Meng passed away at her home in Bridgewater, N.J., on Monday, October 29, 2018. She was 93. Born in 1925 in Middle Village, Queens, N.Y., she was a New Jersey resident for more than six decades, residing in Dumont, River Edge, Brick Township and Bridgewater.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Saturday, November 17, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Somerville Elks Lodge 1068, 375 Union Avenue, Bridgewater, N.J. The memorial service will begin at 1:00 with a reception to follow.

Shirley graduated from Newtown High School in Queens in January, 1942, where she was a member of the Physical Efficiency Club. She was offered a full scholarship to study chemistry at Columbia University, but her parents sent her to Brown’s Business College. Her first job was at Ridgewood Savings Bank in Queens; her last was bookkeeper for Leisure Village in Lakewood, N.J.

Shirley married her husband, Jacob (“Jack”), in May, 1946, at Ridgewood’s Old First Presbyterian Church where the two met. A loving wife for nearly 50 years, she was also a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an avid cook, baker, seamstress and gardener. She excelled at needlework, including knitting, crewel andtatting. A sample of her hardanger embroidery work was displayed at the 1939 World’s Fair. She organized a knitting and crocheting club at the Centerbridge II senior apartment building where she lived for the last 15 years of her life. She donated dozens of lap robes she crocheted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Jack; her eldest daughter, Andrea (“Andi”)Trasborg; her grandson Peder (“Pete”) Trasborg; and her parents, George and Katherine Wolf. She is survived by her daughters Karen Breidenbach, Diana Miller and Sherry Brosnahan; four grandchildren;seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Carolina Kreischer Giller.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (cooper.edu) where her husband, Jack, earned his chemical engineering degree.
