Obituary

Derek Otter, 86, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the Rehab at Riversedge facility.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Rosalie (Lota) Otter; his daughters, Heather Brauner and Brenda Burke; his son, Craig Otter; his step-daughters, Rose Marie Gilbert and Donna Shanley; his step-son, John Shanley; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many friends.
Born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, England, the son of Leonard and Edna (O'Gorman) Otter, he immigrated to the America with his parents in 1948.
In 1952, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1954.
Before entering the Army, Mr. Otter was an accomplished amateur bicycle racer - competing in the Tour of Somerville several years. He turned his hobby into a profession when he became a Sales Representative for the Service Cycle Supply Corporation of Commack, Long Island. Over the years, his job took him from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Georgia. In 1988, he left the bicycle industry to run his own business, VacMan of Covington, GA. After officially retiring in 2014, Mr. and Mrs. Otter eventually relocated to Somerville, NJ.
Mr. Otter enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, museums, golf and was an accomplished photographer. He is remembered by many as always making them laugh and smile.
Since 1973 he was a devout Jehovah's Witness. He loved the Bible and truly enjoyed helping others find comfort and hope through it's message. Mr. Otter was a member of the Bridgewater, NJ Congregation.
