84, died May 16, 2019.

After eighty-four years of giving love, joy, compassion and service to her family, church, friends, work and community; Dorothy Elaine Holness accepted the will of the almighty God at her home in Somerville, New Jersey and took her wings to be at rest in a greater place on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Born on September 30, 1934 she was the fourth child born to Eugenie Dixon and Theophilus Hamilton. Dorothy grew up in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies where she had her formal education prior to relocating to the united State of America. Dorothy settled down in Somerville, New Jersey for 51 years. She studied at the Raritan Valley Community College while employed as a Quality Assurance Technician for thirty-two (32) years with Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson company. Dorothy received several certificates in the health field from the American Red Cross, State of New Jersey First Aid Council, Inc. and the American Heart Association, Inc.

Dorothy was an active long-standing member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Somerville, New Jersey where she served as Deaconess President, Willing Workers and several other ministries of the church. Her community services is very extensive and listed as follows: Charter Member of the Raritan Valley National Council of Negro Women and served as Chaplain. She was the First African American to achieve life member status with the Somerville Rescue Squad. She was the first African American Vice President and First African American President of the Somerville Rescue Squad where she served for 28 years. She attained a life member status in recognition of her years of service with Somerville's First Aid and Rescue Squad. Prior to her joining the Rescue Squad, Dorothy joined the Ethicon Industrial Rescue Squad and served faithfully for twenty-five (25) years. Dorothy respond to more than 200 calls per year. Dorothy also served as a board member to Somerville Board of Health and the Environmental Committee. She volunteered with the United Way and received her STAR Award, participated with the Single Seniors Club and many other community organizations throughout her lifetime. Anyone who knows her will tell you she enjoys traveling, cooking, shopping, physical fitness, eating and always have a volunteer service heart.

She was predeceased by her husband, Winston Roy Holness; mother, Eugenie Dixon; father, Theophilus Hamilton; brothers, Stanley Green; Ronnie Green and Cecil Forbes. Dorothy's memories will be cherished by her children, Yvonne Griner; Arthur Holness; Winston Holness, Jr.; Pauline Gibson (Noel); Andrea Holness; Sandra Holness; Colleen Muse (Vincent); sister, Winnifred Ricketts "Sis G" (Austin); brother, Rudolph Green (Beverly); Brother-in-law, Selbourne (Doreen); Brother, Chester; Sister-in-laws Sydneya Dacres, Beryl Lewis and Violet Holness; a special niece, Paulette Griffith along with several other beloved nieces and nephews. She was further blessed with 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends including the awesome Somerville Rescue Squad Family. God granted her two more years after her massive stroke on May 20, 2017. God used her as a witness to show how truly merciful and kind He is to them that love Him and believe in Him.

Funeral services will be 11am Friday at First United Methodist Church, 48 E. High Street, Somerville. Interment will follow at New Cemetery, 192 S. Bridge Street, Somerville.

Visitation will be 7-9pm Thursday at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville.
