Harold Sheinaus, 100, died at Laurel Circle Managed Care Community on Monday, May 20, of complications from pneumonia.
He was born to Louis and Nettie Sheinaus in 1918. During his youth, he helped his father run a local pharmacy in Hollis, Queens, and followed in his footsteps by studying Mathematics and Physics at City College, completing his Masters degree in Pharmacology at Columbia and earned his Ph.D. at Purdue University.
During World War II, he served in the 76th Infantry Division, landing at Le Havre, France and eventually arriving in Koenigsburg, Czechoslovakia, as V-E Day was celebrated.
Upon returning, he met Rita Selman, fell in love over a Ping Pong table in the Catskills, and married her in 1949.
He worked consistently in the pharmaceutical industry, first at Warner Lambert and for many years at Bristol-Myers as the Director of Pharmacy Product Development.
In later years, he enjoyed volunteering with consumer rights groups and enjoyed golf, tennis and ping pong.
Rita and Harold had two sons, Richard and Robert, who live in Montclair, NJ and Tucson, AZ, respectively.
He is survived by his wife, Rita and was recently predeceased by his sister, Ruth Asimov.
Harold was a man of quiet dignity and compassion who lived a remarkably admirable and long life. All who knew him remember him fondly and will miss his presence.
A memorial service will be held at Somerset Hills Memorial Park later this Summer.
Donations in his name may be sent to the Union of Concerned Scientists or the ACLU.
