82, died surrounded by family on November 13, 2019.

John was born in Gardner, Kansas and formerly of Manhattan, Kansas and Frankston, Texas before moving to Hillsborough in 2018. He attended Kansas State University. John was employed as an engineer in the Piping Industry at Hill Cross in West New York and Fluor International Inc. based in Irving Texas for over 40 years, retiring in 2001. John was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and served on the USS-Hopewell DD-681, a Naval Destroyer, during the time of the Korean War. He was known as a handyman and loved to build and fix just about anything. He had a love for animals and enjoyed spending time with his pets, especially his dog Cali. John will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his son Larry Schmutz and wife Kathy, daughter Lesley Bazzano and husband James, two grandchildren Justin and Mark Schmutz, and former spouse Carole Turner.

Services were private. Arrangements by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 North Gaston Ave. Somerville.
